Football: De Gea extends contract with Man U

English Premier League team Manchester United announced Monday that the club has extended its contract with Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea for another four years.

The English side said on their website that De Gea inked a four-year deal, keeping him at the Old Trafford Stadium until June 2023 with the option to extend for a further year.

After signing the new deal, De Gea said: “It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour.

“Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.”

“I am delighted that David has committed his long-term future to the club,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the club’s manager.

“Over recent years, David has proved himself to be the best in the world and a vital part of our plans as we look to take Manchester United back to where it belongs. David is a fantastic person and his outstanding quality provides the perfect base to our defence.”

The 28-year-old Spanish goalkeeper joined the Red Devils from Spanish La Liga team Atletico Madrid in July 2011.

In his career, he helped Atletico Madrid claim a UEFA Europa League Cup and a UEFA Super Cup in 2010.

De Gea also won the UEFA Europa League title with Manchester United in 2017.

The Spanish goalkeeper has made 367 appearances for Man U, and 40 appearances with the Spanish national team.
